JACQUES LEHMANN (1881-1974) [CATS]. Two decorative panels.
18x411/2 inches.
Condition A-: restoration and discoloration in margins.
Following the success of the Chat Noir and all the commissions the cabaret inspired (including Steinlen and his emblematic representation of a cat for the club) feline images were widespread and very popular during the Art Nouveau era. The young Jacques Lehmann (who quickly changed his name to Nam), however, was hardly jumping onto a thematic bandwagon. He was an animal painter and illustrator for his entire life. Benezit notes "he got his reputation from stylised animals . . . his favorite representations being cats." Lehmann's most famous works date from the Art Deco years and these two lithographs are interesting, early works where you can already see his masterly drawing of animals.
